Chapter Seventeen

ALAIN

All my instincts were urging me to turn back and hang around Drake to get a better read on the guy, but I would appear weak if I showed up at the palace after issuing an ultimatum. I had to let this first meeting between the cousins run its course. Even though I felt the dark magic swirling around Drake like an electrical storm, I had no proof he was there to wreak havoc.

Perhaps Isabelle would be a good resource. She kept tabs on all the covens in Europe through an intricate network of informants. If anyone could shed some light on Drake Bradford, it would be my mother.

Bracing for the inevitable third degree, I pulled up her number and hit connect.

“Alain,” she purred. “How nice to hear from you.”

“Good morning, Maman.”

“What can I do for you this fine day?”

“Do you know anything about Drake Bradford?”

“Apart from his relationship to Maura?”

“Yes.”

“May I ask why the sudden interest?”

“I’ve just met him at Colin’s, and my first reaction is pretty negative. Am I being overly sensitive?”

“So you’re still involved with the brat?”

“Yes, but I didn’t call to get a lecture. Give me the hard facts on Bradford.”

“He’s an opportunist as well as a womanizer.”

“What about his craft?”

“Maura has been grooming him for years, so you can assume he knows what he’s doing. Rumor has it that he’s more interested in acquiring wealth and power than heading his coven.”

“He could do both.”

“Not if he’s too busy climbing the social ladder. One of the words commonly associated with Drake is pretentious. Apparently, he and his mother went through hard times, and Drake is dedicated to overcoming his past. He’s been known to juggle multiple relationships while always on the lookout for the next best opportunity.”

“He sounds like a bona fide asshole.”

“Sociopath is a more apt description.”

“Why would the dowager bring this sort of person into Colin’s life?”

“Perhaps she doesn’t know what she’s dealing with?”

“The more I learn about Colin’s grandmother, the less I like her. She’s utterly self-absorbed.”

“Her sisters don’t have much regard for her either.”

“Is this another rumor or fact?”

“All true. She cut them out of her life after she married royalty, and they never forgave her.”

“And yet Maura has graciously lent her beloved grandson to teach Colin how to be a proper witch.” I was beyond furious, and Isabelle had to notice my change in temperament.

“The boy has magic?”

“Yes, but he’s unschooled. Now he’s determined to learn it all at once. The fool has even asked about time walkers.”

“You know as well as I that they are as rare as unicorns.”

“Except unicorns are mythical creatures while time walkers actually exist.”

“That’s true, but it takes more than desire to make it happen. He has to have the gene, for one thing, and learn basic magic if he hopes to ever attempt time walking—”

Irritated, I cut her off, “Tell me something I don’t know.”

A string of French expletives was unleashed by my rudeness.

“Sorry,” I said automatically. “I’m in a foul mood.”

“Obviously.” Sounding placated,
